Lead Engineer / Senior Engineer, Nano-Optics

Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2000 with the mission of enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness through applied research.

 

ASTRI’s core R&D competence in various areas is grouped under five Technology Divisions: Advanced Electronic Components and Systems; Artificial Intelligence and Trust Technologies; Communications Technologies; IoT Sensing and AI Technologies; and Intelligent Perception and Control Technologies. It is applied across six core areas which are Smart City, Financial Technologies, New Industrialisation and Intelligent Manufacturing, Digital Health, Application Specific Integrated Circuits and Metaverse.

 

Over the years, ASTRI has nurtured a pool of research, I&T talents and received numerous international awards for its pioneering innovations as well as outstanding business and community contributions. ASTRI has transferred about 1,600 technologies to the industry and has been granted close to 1,200 patents in the Mainland, the United States, and other countries.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for the design of nano-optics, AR waveguides, physical optics systems and device development.
  • Perform detailed optical design, optimization, and fabrication tolerance analysis to ensure deliverables meet required specifications and deadlines
  • Resolve technical challenges related to optics, technology research and development, and IP development of core technologies
  • Propose new ITF projects based on customer specifications
  • Assist in executing existing client contracts, including engagement with new clients, requirement verification, and design simulation
  • Perform ad-hoc duties as requested by supervisors

 

Job Requirements:

 

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Optical Engineering, Applied Optics, Physics, or a related discipline
  • Solid understanding of fundamentals of nano-optics with a particular focus on metalenses
  • Proficient in optical design software such as CODE V, LightTools, and RSoft
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Python or MATLAB
  • Familiarity with other commercial optical design software is a plus
  • Experience in designing aspherical lenses for mobile devices is a plus
  • Strong command of written and spoken English, with excellent communication skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team

The appointment will be on renewable contract terms with a competitive salary and performance-linked variable pay. Fringe benefits include paid leave, medical, insurance coverage and contribution to MPF. The incumbent will normally work a five-day week.
